Part of Borderless Travel’s city tour package is visiting Namugongo Martyrs Shrine. The church sits on what used to be the Buganda Kingdom’s execution ground in the 19th century, where criminal offenders or anyone who defied the king was marched 15 kilometers away from the palace and put to death. Namugongo Martyrs Shrine commemorates the courage of the young men, pages of the court of King Mwanga II, who died refusing to denounce their faith.

The pillars of the church represent those martyrs who were executed, burned to death; while around the church are sculptures, one depicts popular martyr Charles Lwanga baptizing the youngest martyr Kizito, before their death.

Every year, in June, Christians undertake an annual pilgrimage to Namugongo, walking from their front door at whichever corner of Uganda they reside, and culminating at the church grounds which are filled by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
