Masai Mara Express (East Africa’s prime safari)
This trip to Masai land often starts in Nairobi, but can also start in Eldoret or Nakuru or in Eastern Uganda towns like Mbale etc. Some people like to fly to Masai Mara instead of taking the scenic drive. This option is only available when departing from Nairobi or Eldoret. Coming from Eastern Uganda and other areas, you will have to drive to Nairobi or Eldoret to catch the flight.
Road trips in a safari wagon to Masai Mara will take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours depending on your starting point. Masai Mara offers a wide variety of wildlife to marvel at and is quiet a buzz during the wildebeest and other wildlife migration season between the months of July and October.
Some of the ways you get to experience Masai Mara are by taking an early morning hot air balloon safari. There is no view like it in the wild at that time of the day. You get to see lion’s wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, elephants and many other types of animals in this corner of planet earth. Another experience in Masai Mara is visiting the Masai villages and getting a cultural experience of these nomad type people. I promise you; this will be like nothing you have ever seen. The dancing and singing, the way of living in their grass thatched huts, it is a very enriching experience. You will take the usual game drives in a safari wagon to come close to the animals. These game drives typically happen early morning or late afternoon onto the evening hours of the day. Masa Mara is one of East Africa’s must visit safari stops. Kidepo Valley Safari (East Africa’s hidden gem)
Kidepo National Park is perhaps one of the most under-rated parks in East Africa. Compared to many other parks, it receives relatively low numbers of visitors which makes it a great place to enjoy wildlife because when you come across a pride of lions, you will not be fighting for space with other safari vehicles to get a good look. The park also offers a wider variety of wildlife than other parks do possess. From lions to giraffes and zebra and cheetahs, this place is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise.
A visit to the park starts in Kampala and if you are flying there, it starts at the airstrip just outside Kampala. The quickest and definitely most comfortable and also most pricey way to get to Kidepo is by airplane. Smaller aircraft are often used for this leg and it takes just under 2 hours to make the trip.
The most regular means of getting to Kidepo off course is the 4WD safari wagon. This is also the best way to get a wholesome experience of Uganda’s countryside. You will get to see the chicken in your face market and if you are in for an adventure, you might as well grab yourself a freshly charcoal grilled, hot chicken on a stick while you are at it. You will drive past the Nile River, the longest river in the world. You will also drive past tea gardens and sugarcane plantations in the red soils of Eastern Uganda.
The Karimojong people who live on the outskirts of Kidepo Valley National Park are a nomadic type people whose culture is still greatly unaffected by the outside world. They love to entertain their guests with a song and dance, and always keen to bring guests into their homes to show off their way of life. It is very different from what you have ever seen, I might as well tell you right now. They always welcome donations for their song and dance. I guess not too insulated from the monetary world after all.
A typical visit to the Kidepo Valley area is 3 days if you are flying in and out, and 5 days if you are driving in and out of the area. The park offers a variety of accommodations from luxury lodges to budget huts. If you are the adventurous type looking to experience a peculiar culture and the wildlife they host in this region.
